What Is a Hot Stone Massage? A Complete Guide

(updated January 26, 2026)

Not all hot stone massage treatments are created equal. While many spas use standard basalt stones, we do things a little differently at Nola Bliss. We use Hot Himalayan Salt Stones. These beautiful, mineral-rich stones provide a gentle, radiating heat that relaxes your muscles, lightly exfoliates your skin, and helps replenish your body. This unique approach enhances the powerful effects of heat therapy, offering a more holistic and restorative session. Here’s a closer look at all the benefits this incredible treatment offers.

Key Takeaways

  • Get deeper relief with less pressure: The targeted warmth from the stones relaxes your muscles, allowing your therapist to release stubborn knots and tension more effectively without needing intense pressure.
  • Find calm for your mind and body: Beyond physical benefits, the grounding heat helps quiet your nervous system, easing stress and anxiety to promote better sleep and emotional balance.
  • Personalization is key to a safe session: A hot stone massage is therapeutic but not suitable for everyone, so it’s essential to share your health history with your therapist to ensure the treatment is tailored safely to your needs.

What Is a Hot Stone Massage?

If you’ve ever wondered what a hot stone massage is all about, you’re in for a treat. It’s a special type of massage therapy where a therapist uses smooth, heated stones as part of the treatment. These aren’t just any rocks; they’re specific stones warmed to a precise, comfortable temperature to help you relax, ease tense muscles, and soothe damaged soft tissues. The warmth is deeply calming and prepares your muscles for deeper work, making it a fantastic choice whether you’re seeking pure relaxation or targeted relief from aches and pains. It’s a wonderfully grounding experience that combines the healing power of touch with the gentle, radiating heat of the earth.

A Brief History of Hot Stone Therapy

The idea of using warm stones for healing isn’t a new spa trend; it’s a practice with roots stretching back thousands of years across many cultures. Ancient healers in China were known to use heated stones to improve organ function more than 2,000 years ago, while similar traditions can be found in India’s Ayurvedic practices. These early practitioners understood something fundamental: that the gentle, lasting heat from stones could provide deep comfort, relax tense muscles, and encourage the body’s natural healing processes. By placing warmed stones on specific points of the body, they could soothe both physical and spiritual ailments, tapping into the earth’s energy to restore balance.

This therapeutic use of stones wasn’t limited to Asia. Native American cultures incorporated heated stones into sweat lodge ceremonies for purification, and ancient Roman healers used them in their famous bathhouses to soothe sore muscles after a long day. For centuries, this wisdom was passed down through different traditions. However, the version of hot stone massage we know and love today was formally introduced to the Western world in 1993 by Mary Nelson, who created a method called LaStone Therapy. Her technique standardized the use of both hot and cold stones, bringing this ancient practice into the modern spa and making it accessible to everyone.

Today, the practice continues to evolve as therapists find new ways to enhance the experience. While traditional hot stone massage often uses smooth, volcanic basalt stones, we take a more modern approach at Nola Bliss. We use Hot Himalayan Salt Stones, which not only provide a deeply soothing warmth but also release beneficial minerals that your skin can absorb. This adaptation lightly exfoliates the skin and helps replenish the body, adding another layer of therapeutic benefits. It’s a beautiful way to honor the ancient tradition of using the earth’s elements for healing while creating a truly restorative experience that connects past and present.

How Do Heated Stones Actually Work?

The magic of a hot stone massage really comes down to the heat. When the warm stones rest on your body, the heat penetrates deep into your muscles, helping them relax and become more pliable. This warmth reduces tension and pain, making it easier for your massage therapist to work more effectively. It allows them to release stubborn knots and access deeper layers of muscle, sometimes without needing the intense pressure of a traditional deep tissue massage. Your therapist will also use the stones as an extension of their hands, gliding them over your body with long strokes and circular movements for a uniquely soothing experience.

What Kind of Stones Are Used?

Traditionally, hot stone massages use basalt, a type of black volcanic rock that’s fantastic at holding heat due to its high iron content. These stones are often naturally smoothed by rivers and feel incredible on the skin. Here at Nola Bliss, we take it a step further by using Hot Himalayan Salt Stones. These beautiful, pink-hued stones provide a gentle warmth and are packed with minerals that can be absorbed through the skin. Your therapist will place these heated stones on specific points on your body to encourage relaxation and ease tension before beginning the hands-on portion of your massage.

Exploring Different Types of Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage isn’t a one-size-fits-all therapy. The techniques and even the types of stones used can vary to create different therapeutic effects. From the classic, heat-retaining basalt stones to the mineral-rich Himalayan salt stones, each offers a unique path to relaxation and muscle relief. Understanding these variations can help you choose the perfect session for your needs, whether you’re looking for deep relaxation, targeted pain relief, or a bit of both. The way the stones are used—whether for broad, soothing strokes or for precise trigger-point work—also plays a huge role in tailoring the experience just for you.

Classic Basalt Stone Massage

When most people picture a hot stone massage, they’re thinking of the classic basalt stone treatment. Therapists love using basalt because it’s a volcanic rock that is excellent at retaining heat, allowing for a consistent and deeply penetrating warmth throughout your session. As WebMD explains, these smooth, warm stones are placed on the body and also used by the therapist to massage your muscles. The sustained heat helps to relax and soothe tight muscles, making it easier for your therapist to work on deeper layers of tissue without applying excessive pressure. It’s a time-tested method that provides profound relaxation and effective relief from everyday tension.

Himalayan Salt Stone Massage

For a truly unique experience, a Himalayan salt stone massage offers benefits beyond just heat. Here at Nola Bliss, this is our preferred method because these beautiful pink stones are packed with minerals that can help replenish your body. Unlike basalt, Himalayan salt stones release these minerals during the massage while providing a gentle, radiant warmth. They also lightly exfoliate the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and soft. This approach is perfect if you’re looking for a more holistic treatment that nurtures your skin and body. You can add our Hot Himalayan Salt Stones enhancement to any of our massages for a truly restorative session.

Targeted Trigger-Point Work

If you have specific, stubborn knots that need extra attention, hot stones can be used for targeted trigger-point work. Instead of gliding the stones across large muscle groups, a therapist can use smaller, heated stones to apply direct, sustained pressure to a particular area of tension. This technique is incredibly effective for releasing tight spots in the shoulders, neck, or at the base of the skull. The focused heat helps the constricted muscle fibers relax and let go more readily than they might with pressure alone. It’s a fantastic way to address chronic pain and achieve lasting relief from those persistent aches.

Relaxing Stone Placement

A key part of any hot stone massage is the strategic placement of the stones on your body. Before the hands-on massage begins, your therapist will place warm stones on specific points to start the relaxation process. Common placements include along your spine, on your abdomen, in the palms of your hands, or even on your forehead. This allows the heat to penetrate deeply, calming your nervous system and warming the muscles in preparation for deeper work. This initial phase of the massage is incredibly grounding and helps set a peaceful, meditative tone for the entire session, allowing you to fully unwind and let go of stress.

How a Hot Stone Massage Helps Your Body

While any massage feels good, a hot stone massage offers a unique set of physical benefits that go beyond simple relaxation. The secret is the targeted heat from the smooth, volcanic stones. This warmth penetrates deep into your muscle layers, allowing your therapist to work more effectively and providing a level of relief that can be hard to achieve with hands alone. Think of it as a way to gently coax your muscles into letting go of long-held tension.

This therapeutic heat prepares your body for deeper work, making it an incredible tool for addressing specific physical issues. Whether you’re dealing with a stubborn knot in your shoulder, recovering from a tough workout, or managing chronic discomfort, the stones add a powerful dimension to your treatment. At Nola Bliss, we often recommend our Hot Himalayan Salt Stone enhancement to help you get the most out of your session, as it combines heat therapy with the restorative properties of the salt. The result is a body that feels looser, lighter, and more at ease.

Ease Deep Muscle Tension

If you carry tension deep in your muscles, you know how difficult it can be to find relief. A hot stone massage is exceptionally effective at targeting this kind of stubborn tightness. The heat from the stones warms up your muscle tissue, increasing blood flow and making the muscles more pliable. This allows your massage therapist to release knots and adhesions with less pressure, making for a more comfortable and productive deep tissue experience. It’s a gentle yet powerful way to persuade those tight spots to finally let go.

Encourage Better Circulation

One of the most significant benefits of heat therapy is its effect on your circulatory system. The warmth from the stones helps your blood vessels to open up, which improves circulation throughout your body. Better circulation means more oxygen and vital nutrients are delivered to your muscles and tissues, which speeds up the healing process and helps flush out metabolic waste. This revitalizing effect can leave you feeling refreshed and can help reduce soreness after physical activity, making it a great option for athletes or anyone with an active lifestyle.

Find Relief from Chronic Pain

For those living with chronic pain conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia, a hot stone massage can be a source of profound comfort. The penetrating heat helps to reduce stiffness in the joints and ease the persistent ache associated with these conditions. By calming the nervous system and relaxing the muscles, the massage can help interrupt the pain cycle, providing a much-needed respite. Many people find that regular hot stone sessions help them manage their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life by offering a natural way to alleviate chronic pain.

What the Research Says About Massage Therapy

It’s one thing to say a hot stone massage feels amazing, but it’s even better to know that science backs up the benefits. Research consistently shows that the application of heat is a powerful therapeutic tool. According to health experts, the warmth from the stones, typically heated to a precise 130-145 degrees, helps to increase blood flow to the areas being treated. This improved circulation delivers more oxygen to your muscles, which can significantly ease tension, reduce painful spasms, and improve overall flexibility. It’s a simple yet effective principle that makes a profound difference in your treatment. Of course, this is why it’s so important to see a skilled professional who understands how to apply the heat safely and effectively, ensuring you get all the benefits without any risks.

Improve Flexibility and Range of Motion

When your muscles are tight and constricted, your range of motion suffers. You might feel stiff when you wake up or notice that certain movements are more difficult than they used to be. Because the heat from the stones goes deep into your muscles, it helps to release the restrictions that limit your flexibility. By melting away tension and improving circulation, a hot stone massage can restore mobility and help your body move more freely and comfortably. This can make a world of difference in your daily activities, from reaching for something on a high shelf to enjoying your favorite workout.

More Than Skin Deep: The Mental Benefits

A hot stone massage does more than work out knots in your shoulders—it’s a powerful experience for your mind. The targeted heat and soothing pressure create a deep sense of calm, helping untangle the mental and emotional stress we all carry. When your body fully lets go, your mind gets the space it needs to quiet down, reset, and find balance. This mental reset is one of the most profound benefits of the treatment, offering clarity that lasts long after you leave the massage table.

Calm Stress and Anxiety

Life can feel overwhelming, and that weight shows up as both mental and physical tension. A hot stone massage is an incredible tool for hitting the reset button. The gentle, consistent heat from the stones helps calm your nervous system, signaling to your body that it’s safe to relax. As your therapist glides the warm stones over your muscles, you can feel the tension melting away from your body and mind. Adding Hot Himalayan Salt Stones to your session can further enhance this feeling of release. It’s a simple way to find peace and leave feeling lighter.

Enjoy Deeper, More Restful Sleep

Tossing and turning at night? A hot stone massage could be the natural solution you’re looking for. The deep relaxation you experience during the session follows you home and can lead to more restful sleep. By easing muscle tension and calming your mind, our therapeutic massage services help prepare your body for a full night of restorative rest. Many people find it a wonderful alternative to sleep aids, helping them fall asleep more easily and wake up feeling genuinely refreshed. It’s not just about getting more sleep—it’s about getting better quality sleep.

Restore a Sense of Balance

Our emotional state is deeply connected to our physical well-being. When you’re feeling off-balance or drained, the grounding warmth of a hot stone massage can help you find your center. The heat has a wonderfully calming effect on the mind, quieting the endless loop of thoughts and worries. This therapeutic experience creates a space for you to simply be present. Our dedicated team of therapists understands this connection and focuses on restoring your sense of emotional equilibrium. You’ll leave feeling not just relaxed, but also more clear-headed and emotionally resilient.

Who Can Benefit from a Hot Stone Massage?

A hot stone massage is more than just a relaxing treat; it’s a powerful therapeutic tool that can provide relief for a variety of specific health concerns. The targeted heat from the stones penetrates deep into your muscle layers, creating physiological changes that can ease chronic pain, calm your nervous system, and support your body’s natural healing processes. If you’re dealing with a persistent issue, adding our Hot Himalayan Salt Stones to your massage could be the key to finding lasting comfort. Let’s look at some of the conditions that respond especially well to this therapy.

Relief for Fibromyalgia and Arthritis

Living with fibromyalgia or arthritis often means managing daily pain and stiffness. A hot stone massage can be a game-changer. The penetrating warmth from the stones helps to reduce muscle stiffness and improve your overall flexibility, making movement a little easier. For those with fibromyalgia, studies have shown that regular massage can lead to better sleep, a reduction in tender trigger points, and an overall decrease in pain. It’s a gentle yet effective way to alleviate chronic pain conditions and reclaim a sense of comfort in your own body.

Easing Muscle Spasms and Back Pain

If you’re constantly battling muscle spasms or a nagging ache in your back, a hot stone massage can offer significant relief. The heat from the stones works to increase blood flow to the affected areas. This improved circulation helps to ease tight muscles, which in turn can reduce the frequency and intensity of painful spasms. By relaxing the tense muscles that contribute to chronic pain and stiffness, the combination of heat and massage pressure helps your body release long-held tension, leaving you feeling more limber and at ease.

A Natural Aid for Anxiety and Insomnia

Your mental and emotional well-being are just as important as your physical health. When you’re struggling with anxiety or can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep, the world can feel overwhelming. Hot stone massage provides a deeply grounding and calming experience. The gentle, consistent warmth combined with soothing massage strokes helps to lower stress hormones and calm your nervous system. This therapy is known to melt away stress, promoting a profound sense of relaxation that can quiet a racing mind and pave the way for more restful sleep.

Addressing Poor Circulation

Proper circulation is vital for your overall health, as it ensures that blood and oxygen are delivered efficiently throughout your body. If you experience symptoms of poor circulation, such as cold hands and feet or muscle fatigue, a hot stone massage can help. The heat from the stones encourages your blood vessels to dilate, or widen, which naturally improves circulation. This enhanced blood flow not only helps your muscles relax but also supports your body’s ability to function at its best, contributing to greater vitality and well-being.

Is a Hot Stone Massage Right for You?

A hot stone massage can feel like a luxurious treat, but its benefits go far beyond simple relaxation. This therapeutic technique is particularly effective for certain needs and lifestyles. If you find yourself in one of the groups below, adding heated stones to your next massage could be a game-changer for your physical and mental well-being.

If You Suffer from Chronic Pain or Tension

If you live with persistent aches and stubborn knots, a hot stone massage can offer significant relief. The targeted heat from the stones warms your muscles, allowing your therapist to work more deeply and effectively. This warmth helps to increase blood flow, which eases muscle spasms, reduces stiffness, and calms inflamed joints.

For those dealing with chronic conditions like fibromyalgia or arthritis, this can be especially beneficial. The gentle, penetrating heat helps soothe the widespread pain and discomfort associated with these conditions. At Nola Bliss, you can add our Hot Himalayan Salt Stones to any massage to experience this profound sense of release and find comfort from long-standing pain.

If You’re Feeling Stressed and Burnt Out

When life feels overwhelming, the weight of stress can settle into your body as physical tension. A hot stone massage is an incredible tool for calming your nervous system and quieting a busy mind. The combination of warmth and gentle pressure is deeply grounding, helping to melt away stress and encourage a state of profound relaxation.

As the stones glide over your muscles, you can feel the tension dissolving, which in turn helps lower cortisol levels and ease feelings of anxiety. It’s more than just a physical treatment; it’s a dedicated time for your mind to rest and reset, leaving you feeling more centered and emotionally balanced long after you leave the table.

For Athletes Seeking Faster Recovery

Whether you’re a dedicated athlete or a weekend warrior, muscle recovery is key to staying active and avoiding injury. A hot stone massage can be a powerful addition to your routine by preparing your muscles for deep tissue work and speeding up the recovery process. The heat helps flush out metabolic waste from your muscles by improving circulation.

This process delivers more oxygen and nutrients to tired tissues, helping them repair more efficiently. By easing muscle tension, a hot stone massage can also help improve how much you can move your body, restoring flexibility and range of motion. It’s an ideal way to care for your body after a tough workout or to prepare for your next physical challenge.

Safety First: What to Know Before You Book

Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. While a hot stone massage is a wonderfully therapeutic experience for most people, it’s not the right fit for everyone. A key part of any massage is open communication, so it’s essential to share your full health history with your therapist. This allows us to tailor the session to your specific needs and ensure you have the safest, most relaxing experience possible. Certain health conditions require us to take extra precautions or recommend a different type of massage that would be more beneficial for you. Think of this as a partnership—the more we know, the better we can care for you.

Health Conditions to Discuss with Your Therapist

To ensure your hot stone massage is both safe and effective, please let your therapist know if you have certain medical conditions. This type of massage may not be recommended if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, or have a history of blood clots, as the heat can affect circulation. We also need to avoid this therapy if you have open wounds, skin burns, a recent fracture, or have had surgery in the last six weeks. Other conditions like severe osteoporosis, a low platelet count, or diabetes require special consideration. It’s always best to be open about your health so we can find the perfect massage service for you.

Pregnancy, Sensitive Skin, and Hot Stones

If you are pregnant, we want to provide the most nurturing and safest experience for you and your baby. While we generally avoid using hot stones during pregnancy, we offer a wonderful prenatal massage designed specifically for expectant mothers. We always recommend checking with your doctor before booking any massage during pregnancy. Additionally, if you have sensitive skin or conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or recent sunburn, the direct heat from the stones might cause irritation. In these cases, a classic Swedish or deep tissue massage could be a more comfortable and beneficial choice for your skin.

When to Talk to Your Doctor First

It’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before trying a new therapy if you have an ongoing health issue. We strongly encourage you to get medical approval for a hot stone massage if you have heart problems, nerve damage (neuropathy), epilepsy, or an autoimmune disease like lupus or MS. According to health experts, this precaution helps ensure the massage will support your wellness goals without posing any risks. Your well-being is the most important thing, and a quick chat with your doctor can give both you and your therapist peace of mind before your session begins.

Specific Conditions and Areas to Avoid

While the warmth of the stones is deeply therapeutic, there are certain situations where it’s best to choose a different type of massage. We always avoid using hot stones over areas with open wounds, burns, or recent fractures. It’s also important to skip this treatment if you have a history of blood clots, take blood thinners, or have had surgery within the last six weeks, as the heat can impact circulation. Certain medical conditions, like severe osteoporosis or a low platelet count, also make hot stone massage inadvisable. If you have a condition that causes a loss of sensation, like neuropathy, it’s crucial to let us know. Your safety is our priority, and being transparent about your health helps us ensure you receive the most beneficial and comfortable care possible.

What to Expect During Your Hot Stone Massage

If you’ve never had a hot stone massage, you might be wondering what the experience is like. Knowing what’s coming can help you relax and fully enjoy the therapeutic benefits of your session. From the moment you walk in, our goal is to create a calm and healing environment tailored just for you. We’ll guide you through the process, but here’s a little preview of what your appointment will look like, from preparation to post-massage care.

Tailoring the Massage to You

Your hot stone massage is your time, and the session will be customized to meet your specific needs. We don’t follow a rigid script. Instead, your licensed massage therapist will talk with you beforehand to understand your goals, whether you’re seeking relief from tight shoulders or simply want to melt away stress. During the massage, we use smooth, heated stones as an extension of our hands to warm and relax your muscles, allowing us to work more deeply and effectively. Your comfort is our top priority. The pressure is always adjustable, and you are in complete control. If a stone feels too warm or the pressure isn’t quite right, we encourage you to speak up. Open communication ensures you get the most out of your therapeutic massage.

The Hot Stone Massage Process

Once you and your therapist have discussed your goals, the session begins. The process is a seamless blend of heat therapy and skilled massage techniques, all designed to provide deep relaxation and targeted relief. From the careful preparation of the stones to the final, soothing strokes, every step is taken with your comfort and well-being in mind. Here’s a closer look at how we bring the magic of a hot stone massage to life.

Stone Preparation and Safety

Your safety is the foundation of a truly therapeutic experience. That’s why the stones are never heated in a microwave or slow cooker; instead, they are warmed in a professional-grade heater that keeps them at a precise temperature, typically between 100 and 140 degrees. This controlled environment ensures the stones are consistently warm and comfortable, never dangerously hot. At a professional studio, every detail is managed to create a safe and healing space. This commitment allows you to fully relax, knowing that you are in the hands of a trained expert who prioritizes your well-being above all else.

Combining Heat with Massage Techniques

The heated stones are much more than just warm weights placed on your back. Your therapist will use them as an extension of their own hands, incorporating them directly into the massage. The warmth penetrates your muscles, making them more pliable and receptive to deeper work. Your therapist will use the smooth stones to apply long, flowing strokes, gentle circular motions, and targeted pressure to release stubborn knots. This combination of heat and technique allows for a deeply effective treatment that can address tension without the need for intense pressure, creating a uniquely soothing and restorative experience.

Communicating with Your Therapist

A great massage is a partnership between you and your therapist, and open communication is key. While your therapist is trained to monitor the temperature of the stones, everyone’s sensitivity to heat is different. It is incredibly important to speak up immediately if a stone feels too warm or if the pressure needs adjusting. Your feedback allows the therapist to tailor the session in real-time, ensuring your complete comfort and safety. Our dedicated team is here to listen and respond to your needs, so never hesitate to let us know how you’re feeling. This ensures you get the most out of your session and leave feeling perfectly relaxed.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

A little preparation can go a long way in enhancing your massage experience. The most important thing you can do is hydrate. Drinking plenty of water the day of your appointment helps your muscles become more pliable and responsive to the massage work. We also recommend arriving about 10-15 minutes early. This gives you time to use the restroom, fill out any necessary forms, and begin to unwind without feeling rushed. It’s also the perfect time to chat with your therapist about any specific areas of pain or tension you’d like to address. Clearing your mind and setting an intention to relax will help you transition smoothly from the hustle of your day to the tranquility of the massage table.

What to Do After Your Massage

The benefits of your hot stone massage don’t stop when you leave our studio. To help your body process the therapeutic work, continue to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This helps flush out any metabolic waste that was released from your muscle tissues during the session. It’s also a good idea to take it easy for the rest of the day. Try to avoid strenuous activities and give your body time to rest and integrate the changes. You might feel incredibly relaxed, or you may experience a burst of energy. Both reactions are completely normal. Listening to your body is key to extending the wonderful effects of your Hot Himalayan Salt Stones treatment.

Finding a Qualified Hot Stone Massage Therapist

A hot stone massage is a specialized treatment, and the quality of your experience depends entirely on the skill of your therapist. Because this therapy involves applying direct heat to your body, finding a provider who is not only licensed but also specifically trained in hot stone techniques is essential for your safety and comfort. A great therapist will do more than just place warm rocks on your back; they will use them as precise tools to release tension and create a deeply therapeutic experience. They will know how to manage the temperature, listen to your body’s needs, and tailor the session to help you achieve your wellness goals, ensuring you leave feeling restored and cared for.

What to Look for in a Provider

When searching for a therapist, look for a licensed professional with specific training and experience in hot stone massage. A qualified provider will always begin with a thorough conversation about your health history to ensure the treatment is tailored safely to your needs. During the session, they should consistently check in with you about the stone temperature and your comfort level, as a trained therapist always prioritizes safety and communication. You should feel completely at ease speaking up if the pressure needs adjusting or a stone feels too warm. At Nola Bliss, our dedicated team of therapists is committed to this level of personalized care, ensuring you feel safe, heard, and respected throughout your entire session.

How Often Should You Get a Hot Stone Massage?

The ideal frequency for a hot stone massage really depends on your personal goals. If you’re working through chronic tension or managing a persistent pain condition, you might find that weekly or bi-weekly sessions are most effective at first. Regular sessions can help manage symptoms and improve your overall quality of life by offering a natural way to find relief. For general wellness, stress relief, and maintaining a sense of balance, a monthly hot stone massage is a fantastic routine. The deeply relaxing effects are cumulative, often leading to more restful sleep and a calmer state of mind long after you’ve left the table. Your therapist can work with you to create a personalized plan that supports your unique needs and helps you feel your best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the stones be too hot? This is a very common question, and the short answer is no. Our therapists are highly trained professionals who heat the stones to a precise therapeutic temperature that is warm and soothing, never dangerously hot. The stones are also warmed in water, which ensures they provide a gentle, consistent heat. Your comfort is the most important part of the session, so we always encourage you to speak up if the temperature isn’t perfect for you.

What’s the main difference between a hot stone massage and a regular deep tissue massage? Think of the hot stones as a tool that enhances the massage. In a traditional deep tissue massage, your therapist uses firm pressure to release tension. With a hot stone massage, the heat from the stones begins to relax and soften your muscle tissue before the hands-on work even starts. This allows your therapist to address deep knots and tension more effectively, often with less intense pressure, making it a deeply relaxing yet powerful experience.

How will I feel after my hot stone massage? Most people leave feeling incredibly relaxed and grounded, with a sense of calm that can last for hours. You might feel a bit sleepy or notice a renewed sense of energy—both are completely normal reactions. Your muscles should feel looser and more pliable. We always suggest drinking plenty of water after your session to help your body continue to process the therapeutic work and stay hydrated.

Do the stones stay in one place the whole time? Your therapist will use the stones in two different ways during your session. Some stones will be placed on specific points on your body, like along your spine or in the palms of your hands, to radiate warmth into key areas. Your therapist will also hold other heated stones and use them to actively massage your muscles with smooth, gliding strokes, using them as an extension of their own hands.

Is it okay to get a hot stone massage for my first-ever massage? Absolutely. A hot stone massage can be a wonderful introduction to massage therapy. The warmth is incredibly comforting and can help you relax on the table more quickly, especially if you’re feeling a little nervous. It’s a great way to experience the benefits of massage in a way that feels both gentle and effective. Just be sure to communicate with your therapist about what feels good.
